Warakurna Community Incorporated
Community, culture and local decision-making in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands.
Warakurna is a Yarnangu community near the Rawlinson Ranges in Western Australia, close to the Northern Territory border.
Families returned to their Country during the homelands movement of the early 1970s. The community became incorporated in 1976 and joined Ngaanyatjarra Council in 1981. Today, its community council provides local leadership, supported by a Community Development Advisor responsible for day-to-day management.
Community programs and activities
Warakurna’s community life includes education, sport, swimming, art and cultural activities, delivered through local organisations and visiting partners.
Activities for young people
Warakurna participated in the Stephen Michael Foundation’s June 2025 roadshow alongside Ngaanyatjarra Council and Ngaanyatjarra Lands School.
The visit included leadership activities, arts and crafts, cultural games, sport and community gatherings, with sessions during and after school. Local school staff, community development teams and youth workers supported delivery.
Swimming and community connection
Warakurna Community Pool participates in Royal Life Saving WA’s Remote Pools Project, providing a place for swimming, recreation and social connection.
In 2026, children, artists and community members helped create a pool mural developed through conversations with Yarnangu families and Elders. It reflects local Tjukurrpa and celebrates students’ school attendance, connecting culture, creativity and education.
Learning close to home
The Warakurna campus of Ngaanyatjarra Lands School provides local education with teachers and Yarnangu educators. Its facilities include a library, practical learning rooms, a basketball court and playground equipment.
Art, culture and employment
Warakurna Artists is a separate, wholly Indigenous-owned and governed organisation serving artists from Warakurna, Wanarn and Patjarr.
Its work includes painting, cultural trips on Country, artist development, advocacy and local employment, supporting the continuation of Ngaanyatjarra culture and Tjukurrpa.
Practical services
Warakurna has a community office, store, health clinic, women’s centre, school and art centre.
A Services Australia Agent at Lot 7 provides access to government services. Check the official agent listing for opening hours and available assistance.
