WAssup 108 Speakers Program: Confirmed — future allocation
The Y WA works with children, young people and families in Newman and surrounding communities, combining practical support with opportunities to learn, play and connect.
Its local program, Pakala Jijikaja Yankuni-la! — the Education Engagement Attainment Initiative, supports learning, wellbeing and community participation. Free activities give young people opportunities to develop confidence, build friendships and try new experiences.
Programs and community support
Learning and family support
Pakala Jijikaja Yankuni-la! supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people aged 0–25, together with their families.
Its work includes:
- Early childhood development: activities supporting school readiness, including a community-led Martu playgroup established at Elders’ request.
- Family support: assistance based on individual circumstances, which may include school transport, uniforms, learning materials, food and connections with other services.
- Recognition and encouragement: celebrating progress in attendance, learning and home routines.
- Community connection: activities that help children, young people and families participate locally.
The program is free. Some activities, including the Martu playgroup and community events, welcome families from the wider community.
Football and active recreation
Nightfields Footy brings children and young people together for evening football at Boomerang Oval. The free program is advertised for ages five and over during school Terms 2 and 3, with opportunities to develop teamwork, fitness and social connections.
Water sports and confidence
The Y’s free activities at Newman Aquatic Centre include:
- Aqua Footy: football in the pool, advertised during school Terms 1 and 4.
- Aqua Slam: water-based basketball, advertised during Term 4.
- Kayaking: sessions developing paddling skills, water safety and confidence, alongside opportunities to learn about further education and employment pathways.
Age and supervision requirements vary between activities. Contact the team for current sessions, registration and transport availability.
