Supporting young people through connection, creativity and practical help.

Blackwood Youth Action (BYA) is a not-for-profit organisation supporting young people aged 12–25 across the Warren Blackwood region of Western Australia.

It began in 2013 when local community members came together over concerns about young people’s wellbeing. Its work brings together mental health support, learning, creative opportunities and community connections, with particular attention to young people experiencing disadvantage or difficulty accessing help.

Programs and opportunities

Mental health and practical support

BYA Connect helps young people and their families identify what support they need and connect with appropriate services. This can include mental and physical health, education, employment, housing and everyday practical needs.

BYA also provides youth and family counselling and outreach. Outreach takes information, advocacy, referrals and practical assistance to young people who cannot easily attend a centre or do not feel comfortable doing so.

Creativity and community participation

Curate by BYA supports young creatives to show and sell their work, develop skills and connect with others through workshops, mentoring and local opportunities. It also offers experience working alongside volunteers in its opportunity shop.

The Creatives program encourages self-expression through different art forms. BYA’s published activities also include Dungeons & Dragons, giving young people opportunities to build friendships, practise teamwork and enjoy shared storytelling.

Connection, inclusion and young people’s voices

Queer Connect provides a welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ young people to connect and spend time together.

BYA’s Youth Advisory Group gives local young people a voice in the organisation and the wider community. Members discuss issues, develop ideas, help plan events and build leadership experience.

Driving, learning and future pathways

BYA Drive helps young people overcome barriers to obtaining a driver’s licence, from getting a learner’s permit through to preparing for their practical driving assessment.

BYA also supports education, training and employment pathways through guidance, connections with other organisations and opportunities such as work experience.

Contact BYA for current activities, locations, eligibility and referral arrangements.
