Kununurra Waringarri Aboriginal Corporation
Community, culture and practical support on Miriwoong Country.
Kununurra Waringarri Aboriginal Corporation (KWAC) is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation in Western Australia’s East Kimberley. Established in 1979, it supports children, young people, men and families through programs shaped by local people and Aboriginal leadership.
Waringarri means “a group of people coming together” in the Miriwoong language. That connection runs through its work: supporting education, creating opportunities for young people, strengthening families and keeping culture central to community life.
Programs shaped by community
Children Are Learning works alongside families to improve children’s school attendance. Learning on Dawang, delivered with East Kimberley College, combines learning on Country, classroom education, life skills and family support to help children reconnect with education, culture and community.
Empowering Youth brings young people together through sport, activities, school-holiday programs and trips on Country. Its Magic Memories Media workshops develop photography, storytelling and digital media skills, giving young people opportunities to share their own stories and build confidence and experience.
The Kununurra Youth Night Space provides a culturally safe place after dark, with food, activities, trusted workers, practical support and safe transport. Outreach and follow-up connect young people and their families with further help. The model was developed by KWAC, MG Corporation and Wunan Foundation alongside government partners and the local community.
Youth Circuit Breaker provides nighttime youth engagement during identified periods of greater risk. Waringarri’s wider services include the Strong Men’s Program, supporting skills and cultural connection; the Northern Australian Aboriginal Men’s Alliance, connecting men’s groups; an NDIS Remote Community Connector; and the Moongoong Sober-Up Shelter, providing culturally safe overnight support for people who are intoxicated.

WAssup connection
Confirmed — future allocation
Waringarri has confirmed a future placement through the WAssup 108 Speakers Program. KWAC will decide where the portable speaker and two wireless microphones are most useful across its programs, including youth activities and the Kununurra Youth Night Space. It may also share the equipment with other local organisations where that benefits the wider community.
The kit will be provided free and managed locally. There is no requirement for Waringarri to fundraise or provide publicity, photographs or videos. Its own safeguarding, consent and cultural protocols will guide participation and any sharing.
Support Waringarri directly
Waringarri’s work extends well beyond a speaker kit. Donations and other practical contributions can support an organisation already working alongside local people.
For giving enquiries, bank-transfer arrangements, partnerships or an offer of goods or services, contact Lisa Grieve, Community Business Manager, at lisa.grieve@kwac.com.au. Discuss any proposed contribution with KWAC so it can advise what is useful and what it can accept.
