RAWA Community School — Kunawarritji campus
RAWA Community School’s Kunawarritji campus serves Martu children and families at Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route, on Manyjilyjarra Country in the Western Desert.
A school was established in Kunawarritji in 1993. Today, the campus forms part of RAWA Community School, which operates across Kunawarritji and Punmu.
Programs and learning
Two-way education
RAWA provides education from Kindergarten to Year 12, combining school learning with respect for students’ first languages, cultural knowledge and community life.
Its approach supports Martu languages and culture alongside Standard Australian English and the knowledge and skills students need to participate in the wider world. Martu and non-Martu educators work together within this approach.
Learning on Country
Kunawarritji students learn through practical experiences involving Country, community knowledge and classroom activities.
Past projects have included studying bush foods with Martu Elders and teaching staff, planning learning with community members, and writing recounts of trips. Students have also learned basket weaving with support from an Elder, artists and local rangers.
Music, storytelling and creative expression
Kunawarritji students worked with Grand Trine Creative and the Wild Dingo Band to create Kinyu Dreaming, a music project bringing together hip-hop, desert reggae rock and community storytelling.
Students contributed their own rap verses, while community voices contributed spoken word and singing. The project provided a way for young people to share their creativity, identity and connection to home.

Community-led education
RAWA is wholly owned and governed by Martu people. Its school board brings together Elders and community members from Kunawarritji and Punmu.
This community leadership guides the school’s direction and helps keep education connected to the aspirations, languages and knowledge of local families.
